Moriz Schlachter, The Sacrifice of Melchizedech

1891
Painted wood relief
Church of St. Gangolf, Wolpertswende, Germany

The episode shown is in Genesis 14:18-20. Melchizedech's sacrifice of bread and wine is a type of the sacrifice of Christ in the Letter to the Hebrews (5:5-7), and of the Eucharist in subsequent theology.

This neo-Gothic relief has all the traditional features for this episode: Melchizedech's crown, the bread and wine, a low stone altar, and Abraham dressed as a warrior. It is less usual to include Isaac, who here is given a function performed by the acolyte in the Catholic Mass, bringing a ewer of water to pour over the priest's hands before the Consecration.
